Recently, Malaysia has faced with significant water crisis and become a great concern to society. The application of the current wastewater treatment technology by adsorption using commercial activated carbon is often restricted by its production cost and time-consuming synthesis procedures (carbonization, activation and washing). This invention presents a new adsorbent (named MagSORB) synthesized via rapid and simple steps with efficient wastewater treatment performance to overcome the drawbacks of current technology. The MagSORB is made from the incorporation of cellulose, polyethyleneimine and magnetic nanoparticles with high adsorption capacity and good magnetic properties that are beneficial for the recovery in short times. The MagSORB is the most suitable adsorbent for wastewater treatment, especially during the pandemic due to its simplicity in preparation and recovery processes. Thus, it can work efficiently for water supply to the community and society.
The application of commercial activated carbon (CAC) in large-scale wastewater treatment is usually restricted by its production cost and time-consuming synthesis procedures (carbonisation, activation, washing, etc.). Additionally, the replacement for tedious separation steps by traditional techniques (such as filtration and high-speed centrifugation) is necessary for the separation of exhausted CAC after the treatment, or, the unrecovered CAC may result in the generation of secondary waste in water and environment. The mentioned drawbacks limit the utilisation of CAC in wastewater treatment and lead to water pollution.
