Category : Health, Wellness & Wellbeing

In Malaysia, most stroke patients will return to their home upon completing treatment at the hospital and will continue with home-based rehab program. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of post-stroke rehabilitation needs, home-based rehab program usually does not meet the quality and intensity of a proper rehab interventions program. To solve this problem, we are proposing a smarter hand rehabilitation assessment device for post-stroke patients. The system consists of a portable hand-grip strength measuring device that connects wireless to a mobile application with exercises in the form of interactive 2D games. Through this system, patients will perform prescribed physical therapy exercises via hand motion and gripping while playing the games. Each therapy exercise and assessment performed will be recorded and stored in a cloud system that can be accessed remotely by therapists for monitoring purposes.
Currently, there are two equipment used in hand rehab therapy at Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras (HRC) and both equipment are expensive and require high maintenance. In the event of equipment breakdown, it resulted in longer repair time and higher repair cost as spare parts need to be imported from United States with the machine inoperable during the entire repairing phase. Moreover, there is only one machine available at HRC due to its cost. Thus it allows only one patient at a time with other patients queuing for their turn. This can hinder the recovery process of a patient especially those that requires intensive and frequent therapy. Due to the complexity of the equipment, therapy has to be done at the hospital and unfortunately, many outpatients are unable to frequently visit the hospital for treatment as it costs money and time. This can also implicate strenuous burden to the caregivers especially for bedridden outpatient.
1. Lack of equipment at hospital - there are only two equipment used in hand rehab therapy at Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras (HRC) and both equipment are expensive and require high maintenance.
2. In the event of equipment breakdown, it resulted in longer repair time and higher repair cost as spare parts need to be imported from United States with the machine inoperable during the entire repairing phase.
3. It only allows only one patient at a time with other patients queuing for their turn. This can hinder the recovery process of a patient especially those that requires intensive and frequent therapy.
4. The brutal COVID-19 forces physical distancing and a Movement Control Order to be enforced thus causing the follow-up rehabilitation program in the hospital to be delayed, affecting the physical healing of the patient.
5. Undoubtedly, an affordable and effective home-based rehabilitation therapy is needed to resolve this problem.
1. Functional value - Include all the necessary hand exercises for stroke rehabilitation in the form of attractive fun games to encourage continuous execution of the exercise. (usefulness)
2. Therapeutic training in 3 dimensions is provided through the use of Virtual Reality based on important daily living activities such as brushing teeth, combing hair, opening and closing doors, preparing meals and many more (applicability).
3. Taking into consideration the level of independence for home care , patient age and tech savviness, we emphasize on ease of self-learning and setup in the home, even for those with poor literacy
4. Design to aid the caregivers in managing the rehabilitation program at home thus reducing their emotional and financial burden with cost effective and affordable price compare to commercially available rehabilitation devices
5. With this device, a rehabilitation program can be conducted at the comfort of their homes thus optimize the rehab recovery time, reduce travelling time and less travelling expenses.
1. the ergonomic structure of the handle to cater for all types of gender, age and medical condition
2. the graphical representation of the app (UX) for all level of tech savviness (including those with poor literacy / poor eyesight)
3. the high sensitivity and durability of the device for continuous usage
4. the simplicity in setting up the system to promote independency (without supervision) for home-based rehab program
5. the cost effective and affordable price compare to commercially available rehabilitation devices
1. List of competitors are CR2 Haptic (Malaysia), Oriori ball (China), Flint Rehab (US), E-link Hand Kit (UK), Neofect Glove (Korea) and Saebo Golve (US)
2. Some competitors are cheap it is very ineffective as the games offer are not suitable for upper limb impairment and do not aid in hand recovery while some are only available locally.
3. Some competitors have reasonable price i.e. below RM3000 but the size of the gripper is not suitable for small hand with no exciting games and little variation in music.
4. Some competitors are very expensive i.e. more than RM10,000 and only suitable for clinical rehab as it requires supervision by therapist. It is bulky thus does not suitable for home-based rehabilitation.
5. Our device provides the solution for all the problems i.e low lost, lightweight and portable, suitable for all types of patient with exciting exercises in the form of 2D games and Virtual Reality (future plan)
1. The global market for home rehabilitation anticipated to exceed $225 billion by 2027 driven by increasing prevalence of chronic diseases associated with disability and unmet needs for rehabilitation.
2. In Malaysia 2018, we have 50,000 new stroke patients every year, 145 government hospitals and 240 private hospitals, hundreds of rehabilitation centres and online/offline rehabilitation devices sellers.
3. Established Collaboration - Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras, Arus Infiniti Sdn Bhd (spin off company), Eartistic Hearing & Balance Sdn Bhd (rehabilitation centre), Mackayver Sdn Bhd (game developer)
4. Potential Collaboration - Seliatek Holdings Sdn Bhd (medical device manufacturer), National Stroke Association of Malaysia, Institut Jantung Negara
