There is limited mobile learning application based on primary school syllabus for English Language in Malaysia. Many teachers and parents are inadequate to teach phonics and basic literacy skills; thus a comprehensive and easy-to-use learning app complete with a teaching module is able to address their needs. Therefore, the purpose of this mobile learning application known as The Pirate of Word King is developed to meet the specific learning difficulties of students with dyslexia in reading, spelling and writing besides helping teachers and parents.
The deficits in basic reading skills lead to poor academic achievement and higher chances to drop out from school. Educators should adopt vary strategies or interventions to assist students with dyslexia in mastering the literacy skills. If left untreated, they will develop low self-esteem and emotional distractibility. Phonics approach is the most promising approach to increase accuracy of word reading. Recent research reveals that assistive technology has become the favorite choices among the leaners with dyslexia. However, teachers are not trained to teach English language and phonics.
