SYNTHETIC BONE WITH AUGMENTED REALITY MOBILE APPLICATION FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH PURPOSES

BOOTH NO : G3

Category : Health, Wellness & Wellbeing

Augmented reality (AR) nowadays keeps growing due to the advancement of science and technology. It could be achieved through the use of digital visual elements, sound, motor skills, and human sensory technology delivered via technology. In other applications, three-dimensional (3D) printing is another technology that keeps growing. By applying this fourth industry revolution (4IR) application in the classroom environment, it would be possible to increase the interest of students in the learning process. This invention is a 3D-printed bone embedded with mobile AR apps that are targeted to the educational sector and research purposes. The 3D modeling of the bone process was taken in place and later continued with the 3D printing process. This product prototype could be a great educational tool in the classroom for teaching courses such as biology, anatomy, and physiology courses.
Despite there being some number of 3D printed models and mobile AR application usage in Malaysia, surprisingly not many publications report the use of these technologies in providing new tools for students in the classroom, especially for medical and biomedical students who will learn anatomy and physiology during their undergraduate studies. Some studies have presented patient-specific 3D printed models of the affected bone and tumor for preoperative planning, reporting improved surgical outcomes in blood loss, operative time and surgical incision. On the other hand, literature reports that AR-based navigation systems are widely used in preoperative planning before surgery can take place. The user acceptance of this application is promising as demonstrated by the previously reported literature. Thus, we believe that applying 3D printing and AR technology would be beneficial to students not only in the classroom but also in other places.
